About the excursion

Want to see the snow-white terraces of Pamukkale and swim in the pool where, legend has it, Cleopatra once bathed?

Highlights

  • Pamukkale terraces
  • Ancient Hierapolis
  • Cleopatra's Pool

Full description

Pamukkale is a natural and historical landmark deep inland, famous for its snow-white travertines, which have formed over thousands of years from the mineral deposits of hot springs flowing down the mountainside. From a distance they look like frozen waterfalls or waves of cotton, which is how the place got its name, "cotton castle".

Next to the travertines lies the ancient city of Hierapolis, parts of which are well preserved: the theatre, the Roman baths and a vast necropolis with carved tombs. A walk around the site shows you what a thriving ancient city built on hot springs once looked like.

Another highlight is the Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool). This thermal pool of warm mineral water is surrounded by fallen Roman columns, and you can step in and swim among them.

On the way to Pamukkale, the route passes through mountain areas and small villages that are very different from the coastal resorts, with plantations and typical rural scenery.

Tour program

  1. Hotel pickup
Please wait on the main road outside your hotel, or by the security post at the hotel entrance if the hotel grounds are large. Departure times differ for each hotel. The time is set by the tour organiser and shown in the voucher on your phone. Due to traffic and other guests running late, the transfer may be delayed by up to 15 minutes.
  2. Breakfast on the way
An hour after leaving Marmaris, we will stop at a roadside café where you can order breakfast and hot drinks or have the lunch box handed out on the bus. You can ask your hotel reception to prepare an extra lunch box the evening before the trip.
  3. Souvenir shop
As we approach Pamukkale, we will stop at a souvenir shop where you can buy silver and zultanite jewellery. The stop lasts 40-45 minutes.
  4. Facilities
When we arrive at the bus parking area, the guides will hand out entrance tickets to those who have them included in the price, or show you where to buy them. If you did not include the entrance ticket when booking, please bring Turkish lira with you, based on the Central Bank of Turkey exchange rate on the day of payment. Each group has 3 hours in Pamukkale, counted from the moment the bus enters the parking area. The guides will show you the way to the white terraces, the theatre, the main sights of ancient Hierapolis and Cleopatra's Pool, and advise you on how best to plan your free time. Cleopatra's Pool has all the facilities you need for a comfortable visit: changing cabins, freshwater showers, toilets and a café. Entry to the pool area is free, and tickets for swimming in the thermal pool itself can be bought either from the guide or at the reception at the entrance to the pool area.
  5. Pamukkale terraces
The entrance to the path down along the white terraces is 300 metres from the pool. The walk takes about an hour and is done on your own. Remember that you can only walk on the Pamukkale terraces barefoot. Along the way down there are several artificial pools filled with 30-40 centimetres of thermal water, where you can lie back and relax in the warm water.
  6. Ancient Hierapolis
The ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis are well worth seeing. Its main part (the main street and the necropolis) is in the north, 1.5 km from Cleopatra's Pool. On day trips, the guides recommend visiting the ancient theatre and the Basilica of St. Philip, which are closer. If you are interested in these sights, allow 30-40 minutes for the walk to the theatre.
  7. Cleopatra's Pool
Allow 30-40 minutes to visit the Antique Pool. You should not stay in thermal pools for longer than 15-20 minutes. Please note that they are not suitable for people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular conditions.
  8. Departure from Pamukkale
You must return to the bus parking area at the time given by the guide. Please do not be late, because drivers, guides and agencies face heavy fines if the bus does not leave the parking area at the scheduled time. The guides are unable to wait for guests or search for them across the huge Pamukkale site.
  9. Stop on the way back
On the way back you will cover the 220 km to Marmaris with one or two 15-minute rest stops at petrol stations. There you will find a café, a shop and toilets.
  10. Return to the hotel
On arrival in Marmaris, the bus will drop you off at your hotels. Please note that the return time depends heavily on where your hotel is located and on traffic. Guests may be dropped off at an accessible spot close to the hotel.
