About the excursion

Fancy seeing an ancient mountain city, heading down into a cave with underground lakes and standing beneath a waterfall in a pine forest, all in one day? This day trip through the treasures of Pisidia takes you from Kemer to Sagalassos, Insuyu Cave and Kurşunlu Park.

Highlights

  • Ancient city of Sagalassos
  • İnsuyu Cave
  • Kurşunlu Waterfall
  • Ağlasun village

Full description

Sagalassos sits on the slopes of Mount Akdağ, between roughly 1,500 and almost 2,000 metres above sea level, and was once regarded as the leading city of Pisidia. Founded before the Common Era and mentioned in Hittite records, it flourished under the Romans, then suffered earthquakes and raids that left it abandoned for centuries until it was rediscovered in the 19th century. Excavations are still under way today, and restoration work aims to keep the monuments as authentic as possible. You can see a theatre that held several thousand spectators, a restored nymphaeum whose ancient fountains still run, Roman baths and colonnades, while the hilltop offers sweeping views of the Taurus Mountains.

İnsuyu Cave lies near Burdur and is one of the largest caves in Turkey, with the second-largest mineral spring in the world among caves of its kind. Visitors can explore a section with illuminated galleries, stalactites and underground lakes. It's cool and damp inside.

Kurşunlu Waterfall, in the Aksu area, drops about 18 metres and feeds several small pools in a narrow green canyon. It's a peaceful spot with dense forest and fresh, cool air, perfect for a short walk and some photos.

Between stops, the tour calls in at the village of Ağlasun for a home-cooked lunch, and the road winds along mountain switchbacks through the Taurus range with ever-changing scenery.

The excursion left the most pleasant impressions. I'd especially like to mention the guide (Tatyana), she spoke with such enthusiasm and heart that the journey flew by. Sagalassos, of course, was the real gem of the day. The views from up high are gorgeous. Kurşunlu Waterfall is beautiful, and the place has a great atmosphere. If you're planning to go, be sure to check the forecast in advance and bring an umbrella.

Really enjoyed the trip to Sagalassos. The ancient city high up in the mountains looks impressive: well-preserved ruins, a theater, fountains and incredible views. The road is scenic, and the guide told interesting stories. The organization was fine, and the hotel transfer was convenient. If you love history and mountains, it's definitely worth going.
