About the excursion

The Red Tour is the classic introduction to northern Cappadocia, the region's most recognisable area. This is where you'll find the landscapes that have become the symbol of the region: fairy chimneys, ancient rock-cut churches with frescoes and breathtaking panoramic views. The tour is ideal for a first visit, as it lets you see Cappadocia's main highlights in a single day.

Highlights

  • Uçhisar Castle
  • Göreme Museum
  • Paşabağ Valley
  • Love Valley

Full description

You'll start the day high up at Uçhisar Castle, the highest point in the region. From here, a sweeping panorama opens up over valleys, rock formations and "fairy chimneys" stretching far into the distance. It's the perfect place to take in the scale and uniqueness of the local landscape right away.

Next comes the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dozens of churches and monasteries carved directly into the rock have survived here, and inside you can still see vivid Byzantine frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries. It is one of the most important historical sites in Cappadocia.

In Paşabağ Valley (Monks Valley), you'll find yourself among the region's most impressive fairy chimneys, tall rock columns topped with several "caps". These are the formations that most often appear on postcards and photos of Cappadocia. Nearby is Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley), where nature itself has sculpted whimsical shapes resembling animals and fairy-tale creatures.

A stop in Avanos introduces you to the ancient craft of pottery. Workshops here still use clay from the Kızılırmak River. The route ends at Love Valley, known for its distinctive tall rock formations and beautiful views.

The Red Tour is a full but comfortable day that gives you a complete picture of why Cappadocia is considered one of the most extraordinary places on earth.
